Hi Dorothy, if no bugs get onto your system system restore's fine. If you get a bug though it will go into system restore and you'll never get rid of it. Each time you run system restore it'll be back again. System restore is, in effect, just a set of configuration settings that tells windows how your system was configured on any particular day. As far as resource hungry applications goes I should think probably either sonar, which is a vertual studio firstly, and secondly, although I'm guessing here, convert x to DVD, which is a program that converts movies and burns them to dvd.

                   John.

Hi John, slight change of Topic but you said you do not believe in System
restore or restore points why is that please? It has saved my bacon a few
times also if you only use Word from the Office suite, which of the
programmes on your computer uses the most power, you are not using a Scanner
or Ocr so which software is the one greedy for resources. I was interested
the voice Daniel does not play up,I only use it in Kurzweil, but is hard
to stop it reading non stop so I only use for long documents that it can
read through. Thanks for your advice Dorothy

Hi Alex, you're welcome to mail me anytime. Incidentally, crashing a
chkdsk
isn't a good idea. Ok, if it froze you didn't have much option, but I
would
suggest that to make sure all your system files are still ok to run sfc.
                   John.

Hi John

this is very interesting, I had about 19 items in my startup, I had a
look
at it following your message to Dorothy and I have unchecked a few of
these.
Interestingly I think, jaws was not in there, I don't understand why that is, unless it's something to do with the fact that jaws doesn't take up a
window on my machine as I prefer to run it from the system tray so it's
out
of the way.

I'll write to you off list about this issue if you don't mind, as there
are
things in there I don't recognise.

Dorothy, programs appear in the system tray because they're running. The
way
to clear your system tray is to stop programs loading at startup. The
higher
the number of programs allowed to start with windows the slower your
computer's going to be. They all use up resources.
The only two programs that run at startup on my computer are AVG and
Jaws.
There really is no reason to have everything running at startup.
If you go to start, then run, type msconfig and press enter the system
configuration window will open. If you back tab till you're on the tabs,
then arrow to the startup tab, then press tab to get onto the startup
list.
Everything in that list is starting with windows. The more of it you
uncheck
the better. If you're not happy doing it yourself you could get help
doing
it. When you've unchecked what you want to uncheck tab down to ok and
press
enter or activate with the spacebar. You'll get a prompt to reboot. click
yes. Your computer will reboot. You'll get a message when your computer
starts to say that you are running in selective mode. There's a check box
to
stop the message being shown again. Check it and press enter. That's it.
                    John.
