It seams to me that is the cause too, Vanja. Problem is, I don't have any other USB sound devices that are connected to my computer which I can unplug. However, the onboard soundcard shows up as a USB device. It's one of these new motherboards where the onboard soundcard appears to be connected through a USB port on the motherboard itself. I've to admit that I don't fully understand this configuration. So if someone with a good knowledge about soundcards would like to explain or offer me a Skype session that would be grate.

As I said, Jaws starts ok, I can even bring up its menus, its utilities, the system tray list, change the synthesiser etc, but it wouldn't talk until I unload and reload it.

I'll give PC Specialists where I got my machine from a call and clarify the score with my soundcard. And perhaps a phone call to Sight and Sound is in order too.

Finally, yes there was a post on how to root Jaws speech through the soundcard but I'd like to leave this for now as I don't want to mess things up!

Many thanks for all the suggestions so far. Truly appreciated!

Cheers,
Amro

It still seems to me like someone else suggested that when jaws is starting up it starts on another soundcard like a USB phone or headset or something like that especially as once you reload it it starts fine. Do you have any such usb devices? If so, temporarily unplug them and restart the computer, I bet jaws will start fine. Someone earlier also gave instructions to how to change the the default soundcard on which jaws starts.
