Many thanks for everybody's advice and offers of help.
I think I may well go for a second hand HP Laserjet.
I had one of great antiquity for many years.
Actually all our problems would be solved by the hire
of a Brother HL-1030 laser printer for a week, to be
used at the Institute of Education.
