Folks... This has definately gone on *WAY* too long.
A capitalism vs non-capitalism discussion is *WAY* off topic.
If you *feel* the need to reply to some post on that sort of thing,
*PLEASE* take it off list. Remember that all of the devs are on this
list (or used to be). That means that every time you post, you are
giving the devs something else to do. I don't mean that people shouldn't
post, but let's be reasonable here - let's at least keep it OBOS related.

Now, I don't want to pick on this poster. In fact, he has some very good
points and I consider it the last post vaguely on topic, which is why I
chose it to respond to:

>My 2 (euro)cents :
>I don't want to see any money given by people for funding a project
>being thrown in a Casino wich is also known for masking people what
>their money is actualy doing : ruining people lives with mass job
>cuts.

Regardless of the nature of the stock market, I have no intention of starting
an investment fund. That was someone else's idea. My thought was something
*FAR* more typical for an OSS project - a fund that people can contribute to
and devs can get money from, either for books/equipment or possibly for
code bounties. That is *ALL*. No investment (although I would try to put
the balance in an interest bearing account until it is needed) - I think that
the
money should be used nearly as fast as it comes in.

>I don't like capitalism, that's why I'm involved in free software devs.
>I don't want the money used to fund a free software project being used
>actually to contribute to the "market".

Honestly, I have looked around at a bunch of different credit card merchants and
such. No one seems to have much different rates. All of the CC companies seem to
charge 2.X% or more, plus some small amount. In addition, a lot of the CC
companies
charge a monthly charge.

As far as the warnings and comments on the above web sites, it is hard to say.
I understand
their points of view. On the other hand, a lot of places do use PayPal and are
very happy.
I read their terms of service (a *very* long and legal document) and I see both
sides of the issue
(the long and short of it is this - if someone uses a stolen credit card to
donate to you, you can
have your account seized).

I don't know. I was just idly thinking about this stuff. None of it is
definate. I know that I have
probably bought a couple hundred dollars worth of books. Others have, too. I
was looking at
buying a second machine for testing. Other kernel people probably are, too. And
there is always
the question of "what happens if sourceforge goes away". It would be nice to do
our own web
hosting. Esp since sf's web hosting is ... unreliable.

This is mostly just something to think about. That is why I asked everyone to
respond to me, personally.
So we wouldn't blast the list traffic to the moon. I don't know that I want to
go to all of the trouble
to do something like the Apache Foundation. Where there is a legal entity that
"owns" the code.
It would remove all of the legal issues. It would give people a place to donate
and to request
funds for work. But it would be *more* admin for me. That is what really stops
this (and a lot of
other things) is that I don't personally have time to be everywhere and do
everything.
