This may actually be a good thing in preparation for the upcoming releases (maybe not alpha, but perhaps beta and final R1). I have been doing quite a bit of Drupal development lately (mainly with D6), so this is something that I think I can tackle and would actually enjoy doing (much more than tweaking the existing theme which, being based on a D4 theme, lacks support for a lot of theme-related features Drupal has added in their latest releases).
