Can you set your mail client to not download attachments or to just grab X
number of bytes? I have that setup on my phone and could see where it would be
useful on metered connection. There wouldn’t be anything stopping someone from
spamming your address, or when you go to a site where they have the 10MB images
that aren't scaled. I think part if it is going to how it's consumed.

I don't think a good answer to "I don't want people sending me giant
attachments" is "don't participate in the list then".

google's web interface. I thought this was rather silly at first, but
it's damned convenient to search the seven (7!) years of lasersaur
google group history. Yes, I have a copy of all those messages on my
professional-use laptop, but when I'm in the studio using my vintage
MBP or linux headend I can just go to google and do a search.
