Sure, for searching the archives the webinterface, which freelist had
as well, is great.
I don't think a good answer to "I don't want people sending me giant
attachments" is "don't participate in the list then".

You can also receive *no* messages at all and read the group via
google's web interface. I thought this was rather silly at first, but
it's damned convenient to search the seven (7!) years of lasersaur
google group history. Yes, I have a copy of all those messages on my
professional-use laptop, but when I'm in the studio using my vintage MBP
or linux headend I can just go to google and do a search.
