Even 5MB is a lot for a metered and/or slow connection, especially
since not everyone will be reading all of the messages. I don't even
know if some mail clients could handle a 25MB attachment. That's
simply insane.
I never said my opinion didn't matter, just that the ship has sailed
and no one really cares about people who don't want attachments for a
variety of valid reasons. I also really take offense to the group
being private. It's not private, it's just not public-by-default.
There is a big difference.
And people have posted in the past information such as telephone numbers,
addresses, the current location, and other private information which could
come up in a random google search.
Jim, we had a couple of members meeting discussions on this, and after a
lengthy debate, the membership voted on moving to Google Groups. Of course
your opinion matters. We try to provide Google Hangouts for every members
meeting, so that all members can participate in the discussion, even if they
can't physically be there.
See here. New business section.

The main privacy concern I see, is that if you google HackPittsburgh, often
our freelists posts come up in the search results. And people have posted in
the past information such as telephone numbers, addresses, the current
location, and other private information which could come up in a random
google search.
Also
"The maximum size limit for messages sent to a group is 25 MB, including
attachments (the normal Gmail limit). Group owners or managers can edit
specific groups to set lower size limits. The default size for a message
sent in Google Groups is 25 MB"
We can set the maximum size limit to a much lower file size, say 5MB.
Let us know if there are other concerns. Google Groups has many many
settings and is very customizable, which is another attractive feature. We
will customize it according to the wishes of the membership.
Also you can select exactly how you want to receive your messages
(individual message, 25 messages at once, daily summary, weekly summary,
monthly summary, etc.)

Just because someone cannot access Google Groups randomly, that does
not mean someone cannot release messages from the lists themselves. It
would be best to not consider the list private or privileged.
Also, everyone will need to download your attachments. Please be
considerate of those on metered connections and do not post large
attachments. I don't want to download your giant pictures or PDFs that
I have no need for and will delete almost immediately.
So, honestly, I still think the two reasons for moving to Google
Groups is a folly, but I guess I'm not active enough to have mattered
in this discussion.

If you have not done so yet, please join the HackPGH Google Groups.

We will begin using this instead of freelists in a month or two. First
we
will make sure that everyone is signed up. Also, freelists emails will
automatically redirect to the google groups email.
2 Main reasons are: Privacy and Attachments.
