Is there a setting in the Google group to not send emails from people
complaining about useless subjects that they could find ways to fix
themselves but instead just want to take up everyone's time with?
I cannot prevent people from sending large attachments, so no, it's
not something I can fix myself.

Just because something is useless/unimportant to you doesn't mean it's
unimportant to everyone.

Sure, I can, but what about someone still using a webmail client that
has a smaller quota? Their server will download/accept the whole
message and it counts towards their quota. When I was at Pitt the
quota was a pittance.

I have that setup on my phone and could see where it would be useful on
metered connection. There wouldn’t be anything stopping someone from
spamming your address, or when you go to a site where they have the 10MB
images that aren't scaled. I think part if it is going to how it's
consumed.

Sure, for searching the archives the webinterface, which freelist had as
well, is great.
I don't think a good answer to "I don't want people sending me giant
attachments" is "don't participate in the list then".

You can also receive *no* messages at all and read the group via
google's web interface. I thought this was rather silly at first, but
it's damned convenient to search the seven (7!) years of lasersaur
google group history. Yes, I have a copy of all those messages on my
professional-use laptop, but when I'm in the studio using my vintage
MBP or linux headend I can just go to google and do a search.
