George, your code categorization sounds wonderful!!! Personally, I can't
wait to get it!!! Thanks for everything you and all those who answer
questions do to make this list special. I do think a positive, constructive
list helps all of us as we learn about Duxbury, and there are always new
things to learn so it's never dull.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to any files that help all of us--sighted or
visually impaired--and I appreciate Duxbury for their product and their
support.

Hi again Peter, (Sorry this is rather long)
I don't think I explained myself too well, so let me try again. I'd better
also add that I may also sound like I'm playing devil's advocate here. I
am, but everyone's comments are valued provided they are constructive.
The Codes Quick Reference Section is a list of DBT codes in alphabetical
order. It is a reference section for people who want to know what a
specific code does.
I have added a section of links at the start of the Code list, being A thru
Z, which will make it faster to look up a specific code which appears in a
document, and which you are not sure about.
The explanations in this section are quite technical, and so I am beginning
to write simple explanations, reached by the "Tell me more button". The
keystrokes to that button are very simple - Tab until you hear it say, "Tell
me more", then press the Enter key.
This takes you to a Topic which hopefully explains things in simple terms.
Basic Headings of these are:-
Simple name of Code, e.g., under the Text Subject, "Keep together"
Codes Used:
What does it do?
Where would it be used?
Usage in DBT: (Example given)
Produces in Braille: (Example given)
Let us explain:
For the more technical:
I hasten to add here that I have also added links in in the Quick Codes file
where, for example, it might say, "See also [kps]". Hence you may have to
tab a few times to get to the button.
That's fine if you know the code, but what if you don't?
Well, after quite a few years on this list, plus our own technical support
here in the U.K., I have realised that questions about Codes from users tend
to come in fairly broad categories. (Wait! I'll cover Layouts in a moment)
A few common examples of where people get stuck with Codes are:-
Page Numbering - changing - Roman - Arabic.
Paragraph Treatment - indents - spacing between.
Tabulation - aligning columns of figures, menus, prices lists, leader dots.
Margins - left - right.
Running Headers and Footers - stopping - changing - different on alternate
pages.
Headings (as opposed to Headers).
Now as you will appreciate, these are what might be called "Generic Document
items". They are the same world-wide, and the questions and answers are
much the same as far as DBT is concerned.
OK. So now you ask about Layout, and of course there are lots of questions
about that too. BUT, and it is a VERY BIG BUT.... Invariably, these Layout
questions are a local issue to the country from where the question has been
asked.
In America, BANA have stated Layout Guidelines.
In Great Britain, BAUK have suggested Layout Guidelines.
In France, their braille authority has laid out Layout Guidelines.
So how can I possibly write a section on say for example, "Title Pages" when
there are innumerable variations on the same theme all over the world?
Hence I feel it sensible to take the stand that the DBT user should know the
recommendations for their country's preferred layout of braille.
So now you look at BANA's guide to how braille is laid out and it tells you
that, a Title Page must be done in a specific way.
Your question now is, "I know the information I need to display, but how do
I make DBT set it out that way?". And we are back to questions like, "How
do I get my Chapter Title page with an equal number of blank lines top and
bottom and not display a page number?"
Then - "I want to begin my document with a preface that contains Roman
Numerals as page numbers, then start the book at page 1 in Arabic numbers".
