This seems close to what I was starting to expand on in saying

hybrid of mineral consciousness and the largely intellectual aspects of human
consciousness.  They are an embodiment of the over-rational, emotion-ignoring,
body-denying confusions of their makers."

This describes an intrusion from one area.  Others are drugs (as Dan notes),
robots, cars, electrical lights, telephones, single family houses, and now cell
phones, and texting, and on an on.  Wasn't the original intrusion larger scale
agriculture?

If you are going to call a drug a "machine," then what isn't a machine?
