My sentiments exactly.  Though most of our output is
conventional 2d material, that will hopefully change. 
Since I'm working [freelance] for a design build
concern, the drawings are primarily for our use and
the 3D object with attributes makes the most sense. 
BTW, we're using Revit as well and I cancelled my
personal subscription on the same day that they
announced their sale to Autodesk.  But that's another
rant...

At any rate, I would prefer to direct my volunteer
efforts toward 3D.  Perhaps a code fork is in order? 
QCAD's FAQ also points out that since 2d and 3d
software architectures are entirely different beasts,
that they have no plans to pursue 3d...
