It's starting to sound like the database is going to be the most important aspect of package architecture. I'd really like to talk to the boys at Microform/Sweden about Varkon's development philosophy. The model format is less of an issue -- simply pick something universal and open. XML is taking a fast lead here -- in my mind -- with VRML[older] in second place. I can't get that excited about adopting/adapting .dwg because patent/IP laws have gotten way out of hand. No way would I risk developing a system only to have it collapse down the road because an Autode$k lawyer can beat up my lawyer. Dxf sounds like a safer bet. The reason I'm pushing VRML/XML is because "the kids love it." That is, the gamers -- a very broad talent base -- fiddle with these all the time for their various projects. I'm not advocating using a game engine as an engineering package -- necessarily. I'm just pointing this out because the lines have blurred between gaming worlds and VR worlds for research and design.
