Solidworks is a great package... certainly easier to pick up than AutoCad. 
Another one to look at may be Pro/E check out their Linux beta which is the 
best application I've yet seen on a Linux platform, from the standpoint of 
ease of use. I do prefer Solidworks 2D though, probably because I've used it 
daily for over a year.
        I'd be of no help coding but I'd like to keep abreast of this project. 
Perhaps I can help out with specs or interface layout
