Hi Roger,

That's how I feel about proofing! Larry and I usually work together as a
team but he is willing to scan for others! I haven't proofed for a while and
may or may not get back to it, not really sure! Before I took my break, I
had proofread for 8 years without much of one!

Susan

I think it is for those who want to do it. Personally, I don't care to
participate. I prefer to scan whatever I can get my hands on whenever I can
get my hands on it and to scan at my leisure without feeling the pressure to
get something done for someone else. When I am ready I just upload whatever
I have been working on and let anyone proof it when they get to it first.

Am I missing something here?

Is this new list of who likes what that's going to be used to create paired
scanners and proofreaders supposed to be for just those volunteers who like
the idea, or are all of us suddenly being asked to jump on another
bandwagon?

If this is intended for all volunteers, it has all the potential to be yet
another administrative nightmare, and would make no sense to me.

Just my (somewhat jaded) opinion! smile.

I think that Ann Parsons said this earlier, but I am totally baffled by the
need for yet another list and for the complexities everyone is creating.
I have been a volunteer for about five years, and several times when I
proofread a book of interest to me I contacted the submitter and asked if
that person would let me know when they had a certain type of book available
or simply stated that I would be glad to proofead some of their future
submissions. I have developed several good working relationships through
this method.
Also, if someone wants a proofreader for a specific type of book that
request can be mentioned on the volunteer list. Sure it takes a while to
develop working relationships, but whatever happened to human interaction.
Creating a list to pair submitters and proofreaders seems to me to be a
beaurocratic nightmare.

It does seem that Bookshare wants to control everything! We are not allowed
to decide who gets our credits, and now we must submit our names to a list!!

The free spirit volunteering used to have is gone!!!! Personally, I do not
like being controlled to this point!

Hi Jackie,

Yes, that would be my idea. It sounds like it would be harder to manage
than I hoped, but perhaps if Madeleine puts the lists together, at least we
can contact Bookshare staff and ask who might be interested in partnering on
particular projects.

It doesn't sound as efficient that way. What I was hoping for was more
efficiency in the process so that someone with an idea could contact someone
who could partner. Perhaps it will grow over time.

Hi,
Sandy, that's a great idea. Even though there are a lot of PQ books
out there, there are still more that will never be submitted.
One question, with your suggestion, are you saying that if a proofer
or scanner likes a book that is not on the site, they contact a
scanner or prooffer to see if they will do it? I think that's what you
said but I want to clarify.

Hi Ann,

The purpose is that a proofreader longing for a book to proof could
contact

a known scanner and ask if they'd be willing to scan it. A scanner
with a book that needs proofing could check with a proofreader or two
to see if they'd do it. It just seems more efficient to me than
tossing a book out there on the checkout without a hold and hoping it
gets taken. And I was hoping, also, to rouse some interest among
proofers to peruse booklists and

sites for books not in the collection that they'd like to proof, then
work with a scanner to get the book, scan and submit it, and hold it
for the person who contacted them.

Anyway, long explanation. Sorry.

Hi all,

Why go through all this? The email and name of the scanner is
listed in the Book History. I don't understand the need for a separate

list.
