It wasn't confusing at all to me and it makes very good sense as well.
That's usually the way I do them which is only occasionally!

I was reading the example page on a braille display, even though I
generally tend to listen to my books, just because it's faster that
way. I think if, once you got down to the actual footnotes, their was
a corresponding number before each footnote, it would be less
confusing than multiple stars. example: *7 "whatever footnote 7 says"
*8 "whatever footnote 8 says"

But don't include the quotes; I just put those there to try and make
sure everyone understood that I was referring to footnote 8. Anyway,
maybe that was too confusing, but multiple stars would confuse me if I
were reading in braille because what if there were more than 3 stars?
Then I might think what followed after the 3 stars that were being
used to say that the following text corresponded to the third footnote
on the page was actually the main text.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.
