To make a passing comment on this, I was reading an article about the use of hyphens a while back. The article said that when a new compound word is created because there is a new need for a word in the language it is always written with a hyphen. The example that was used was base-ball. After the word has been used for some time, and especially if the word becomes very common the hyphen is eventually dropped. The article went on to say that signs of this process were already being seen with the word e-mail. The author said that he was seeing that word more and more often without the hyphen. I don't know when that article was written, but I think he had a point because it seems that the word email is now always written without the hyphen and I don't know if I have ever seen the word baseball written with a hyphen.

Hi, as for me, a hyphen is different from a dash for reasons Sue Stevens and Roger Bailey stated; however if one is using a dash in Braille one doesn't put a space before or after it contrary to works in print. The important thing is I understand the difference between hyphens and dashes even though my screen reader may not. I also learned that two hyphens constituted one dash and said dash was used to isolate a phrase in a sentence to amplify or illustrate what came before it and connecting that with what comes after it. A hyphen divides a word when one reaches the end of a line or for compound words. At one time, one would always write to-day rather than as today, cook-book rather than cookbook, etc. I suspect people who spent time as secretaries as my mother did had definite ideas about the difference between hyphens and dashes. I believe she told me about such when I was little and teachers in school re-enforced that. Some typewriters did not have a 1 key, so it was necessary to represent a 1 with an l. As I recall, most typewriters did not have a dash, so since a dash is simply a rather long hyphen it was represented with two hyphens. Perhaps I am remembering wrong, but I seem to recall that some typewriters did have a dash key. As I sit here before a computer key board with all the various keys that did not even exist back then on any typewriter I do kind of wonder why there is still no dash key. Whatever the reason, I still retain the convention of using two hyphens for the dash. I can't think of any situations in which you would have a double hyphen without it being a dash, but if there are any then the context of the double hyphen should let any of us know that it is a dash. That is why when I used the word dash I meant double hyphen, at least I meant that is how I would type a dash. To me a double hyphen is a dash. _ _ _ "Everything must justify its existence before the judgment seat of Reason, or give up existence." - Friedrich Engels Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/rogerbailey81 The Militant: http://www.themilitant.com Pathfinder Press: http://www.pathfinderpress.com Granma International: http://www.granma.cu/ingles/index.html----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Stevens" <siss52@xxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 4:30 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: M dashes and fontsHi Mayrie, In the days when I took dictation on the dictaphone, if someone said dash, they meant two hyphens, not one hyphen. If they said hyphen, theymeantone hyphen, not a dash, which was two hyphens. Thus, I do notunderstandwhat you mean when you say we were never told to convert M-dashes to dashes. It used to be necessary to convert them to two hyphens, but now the conversion tools do thisforus. A dash is a hyphen creating a compound word, an em dash, or in theolddays, two hyphens denoted a pause in the reading. Very, very differentthings,so if people are converting em dashes to a single hyphen or dash, they'renot helping at all! If I have to do a training book, not sure I will cause I'm not sure I have the time. First of all, if the book has m dashes, do we take those out, or dothey translate into double hyphens. Or should they be changed to --. Second, am I supposed to go through this book and find fonts tochange. Some of these say 11 point, not greater than 14. Metyhinks these are my only questions about the book.
