That is what I was trying to say, Roger. When I first started proofing, we were told to convert the M-dash to a double hyphen, which wouldl have been a dash. I was never told to convert them into hyphens, which would be one hyphen. (smile) Just a technicality, but a very important one.

Back when I was learning to type in high school different typewriters had different numbers of keys. Some typewriters did not have a 1 key, so it was necessary to represent a 1 with an l. As I recall, most typewriters did not have a dash, so since a dash is simply a rather long hyphen it was represented with two hyphens. Perhaps I am remembering wrong, but I seem to recall that some typewriters did have a dash key. As I sit here before a computer key board with all the various keys that did not even exist back then on any typewriter I do kind of wonder why there is still no dash key. Whatever the reason, I still retain the convention of using two hyphens for the dash. I can't think of any situations in which you would have a double hyphen without it being a dash, but if there are any then the context of the double hyphen should let any of us know that it is a dash. That is why when I used the word dash I meant double hyphen, at least I meant that is how I would type a dash. To me a double hyphen is a dash.

Hi Mayrie,

In the days when I took dictation on the dictaphone, if someone said dash, they meant two hyphens, not one hyphen. If they said hyphen, they meant one hyphen, not a dash, which was two hyphens. Thus, I do not understand what you mean when you say we were never told to convert M-dashes to dashes. (smile)

Hi Roger,

Never were we told to convert em dashes to a dash. It used to be necessary to convert them to two hyphens, but now the conversion tools do this for us. A dash is a hyphen creating a compound word, an em dash, or in the old days, two hyphens denoted a pause in the reading. Very, very different things, so if people are converting em dashes to a single hyphen or dash, they're not
helping at all!

Mayrie

As I recall, we were told some time back that it is better if we change the
m dashes to a dash, but it is not required.

Ah something else I didn't know. I have been changing those crazy M-s to
1
dash. One less step I guess! Sorry Cindy for the misinformation.

Cindy good news you can leave the m dashes in since the braille
translation
software can now read them correctly, as far as fonts go, I'll let someone
else answer that. Smiley good to have you back again.

Ugh, I have proofread before, but there are things I should remember.
If I have to do a training book, not sure I will cause I'm not sure I
have the time.

First of all, if the book has m dashes, do we take those out, or do
they translate into double hyphens. Or should they be changed to --.
Second, am I supposed to go through this book and find fonts to change.
Some of these say 11 point, not greater than 14.

Metyhinks these are my only questions about the book.
