Hi, It amazes me how many people have no clue what the white cane means and the number of times I have heard "Oh, it's right over there." And when you ask, "Where is over there?" The response you get with some WHAT greater emphasis and amazement is "WELL RIGHT OVER THERE!" I'd like to tell you about the time my wife and I boarded a mono-rail in Reno and apparently got the last two seats. After sitting another gentleman boarded and thought my cane was an upright post to hang on to even though it didn't go to the top rail . And, after a short ride, realizing his mistake and receiving his profuse apologies and apparently turning a very bright shade of red , I am told, every one around us had quite a chuckle. It is not funny about the can I pet him when the sign says know actually because it happens while we are doing other things and can be dangerous. For instance, people try to pet a guide while we are navigating across streets or in crowded areas or while I am getting on or off a train or bus or onto or off a subway or going up crowded stairs or through crowded doors where I have to hold the door or on snowy streets where I have to pay attention because the sidewalk is not clear to me given the amount of snow or on ice in the winter where I have to pay attention. Petting people's guide dogs in situation where the person is traveling is simply not amusing and truly a pain and a absolute hazard for the guide dog and person traveling with same.

Shelley that is funny about the is that a real dog,
and the can I pet him even though the sign says no.

I liked the one, I think it was Dan said about the
persn said yes the building is right over there.

But really I was thinking as I was reading earlier,
you can't always tell a person is blind. I think
Barbara mentioned people ignore here. It might not be
people ignore because they're prejudiced; they might
just ignore everybody. Haven't you ever been around
people like that?

Have you ever heard the comedian Bill Engvall of
"Here's Your Sign"?

Really, when people ask dumb questions you should come
back with answers like he gives in his routines!

Is that a real dog? Naw, I just loved my toy stuffed
dog so much we brought him to life.
