Building a knowledge structure in school English: Troubles and (potential)
triumphs

Abstract
This paper reflects on disciplinary vagueness in school English and the problem
of building a knowledge structure that is distinctive and democratic. I begin
with three moments in the creation of a national curriculum and what they
reveal about the difficulty for educational linguistics. Then I consider why
knowledge building is so fraught, drawing on insights from Bernstein and later
social realist theorists of knowledge. Focussing on the possibilities of
progression revealed in analyses of students’ response texts, I offer a framing
that teachers found useful in building knowledge of concepts like voicing and
point of view.
