Negotiating the validity of health information on social media

In this talk, we continue reporting on our project investigating the critical
health communication of CovidBaseAU, a group of teenage boys involved in
tracking Covid-19 data in Australia. After a brief overview of the discursive
activities CovidBaseAU participate in across digital platforms, we zoom in to
explore the nature of conversations they enter when they challenge the validity
of vaccination data reporting on social media. Drawing on a social semiotic
approach to dialogic affiliation (Knight, 2010; Zappavigna, 2018), we explore
the social bonds that are at stake when (de-)aligning around a critical stance
on health messages from media and government sources.
