Hi,
I just wanted to clarify that the £1.7 million Steve Tyler referred to in his
email was for all RNIB's activity around accessing TV and radio, and not just
the Tvonics project. Without breaching contracts/confidentiality, I can say
that the investment in this specific project was a tiny, tiny proportion of the
overall budget. I would also like to reassure you that we do undertake very
thorough due diligence checks when entering into agreements, but the reality is
that there are always risks, whether you're dealing with large or small
companies. We've lost some pretty big household names over the past couple of
years! You have to weigh up the cost versus benefit.
We do currently have stock and are continuing to sell the product. We are in
contact with the administrators and very much hope the Tvonics product will
continue to be available both from RNIB and the high street. As soon as we
have anything concrete to share we will.

I don't want to get into a big debate about what happened as only RNIB
themselves can and probably will make a statement about it. And Tris has
made some valid points about them wanting to perhaps stick to a smaller
player than go with one of the bigger outfits.
But many of us are members of RNIB and, therefore, do have some right to
ponder and even the need to know what they have spent that amount of money
on.
That doesn't detract from what the collaboration between RNIB and TVonics
has produced though. It is a really good product, and I find it very
useful. I don't record a lot, but the EPG is helpful, and the ability to
ascertain what channel you are on and the programme being shown make it so
much more accessible. It's very unfortunate this has happened, and I hope
everyone who wants one will get a TVonics before they disappear.

I thought I read £1.7m, but it seemed too fanciful.
I'm not bashing RNIB, but I can't understand why they collaborated with this
company when it had already been in administration if what I have read is
correct? Surely anybody worth their savvy would have checked out the
legalities before entering into such a costly venture.
If they worked with Goodmans on a Freeview box with speech, I wonder why it
wasn't possible for them to enhance that setup by producing the same HDD box
that TVonics has produced? Then there is Panasonic with its TVs that
incorporate speech. I wonder why RNIB, if they assisted in this
development, couldn't have negotiated further to produce the said Freeview
recorder?
I know it's never that simple, and perhaps Panasonic and Goodmans wanted too
much money, or weren't prepared to go down that road for whatever reason.
But it begs the questions don't you think people?

I have it here and have copied the relevant parts below. £1.7 MILLION is a
helluva lot, even at the £200 per hour they say they pay their consultants,
that's 4 consultants at £200 per hour working 8 hour days for an entire year
on this. So, yes, I'm as keen as anyone to know what this library looks
like. Anyway, here's the email:
