Hi Damon,

The cost for the SMS service, which is great, is 25p per successful
recording. That means if you put in a programme that is not on the Sky =
EPG
or make a mistake, you are not charged.

You will also be able to set up remote recordings to your Sky Plus box =
over
the web soon. I still think Sky is the best way to go, and offers the =
most
choice in the channel line up.

All the best

nEBULA

Hi.

I'm going to send another email shortly about the BBC iPlayer and how =
you
may not need to buy a system like Nebula really soon. But first I'm =
going to
talk about Sky + as a serious alternative.

The Nebula electronics system seems a little lacking if it can't pick up
subscription channels.

And I'm assuming that, being as you're not buying into Sky Digital, you
won't be able to take advantage of Sky's cheap dish installation =
service.=20
You will have to get an indepednent local company to put up your dish at =
I'm
guessing would be a couple of hundred pounds?

Have you tried using Sky + at all? Much of it is accessible without =
having
to learn lots of menu-dodging keystrokes. It's easy as pie to pause
programmes and view them again ... though you will be arrowing down a =
menu
list of your recorded programmes you can't see the title of, at least =
you'll
have a vague idea of what's there and can dip in and out to hear a bit =
of
audio to see if you hav found the show you want to watch.

You can record programmes by sitting and waiting for them to come on ... =

then hitting the big round select button with the record button straight
afterwards. The recording will end when the programme ends and will =
appear
in your recorded programmes menu immediately.

Though you won't have access to the Electronic Programme Guide, your
recorded programmes menu is easily navigable .I use mine all the time.

Note that I am someone who usually refuses to learn menus because I see =
this
as a ridiculous access solution oftentimes ... happily little learning =
is
needed here.

Of course, the best thing about sky + is being able to record programmes =
in
advance and add series links so that you never miss your favourite show. =
I
understan dfrom Sky that you can now use their SMS text message service =
to
set up advance recordings on your sky + box. I haven't researched how =
much
this costs but, on a yearly basis it might be worth calculating whether =
or
not it'll cost more to put up a dish?

I find the whole computer access just completely unsatisfactory and we
should all be lobbying Sky to get access to the EPG via set-top boxes.

This is going to become more of a serious issue as Video on Demand =
starts to
become the norm. BT's new BT Vision service starts next week and from =
day
one the vast majority of the TV they supply will be inaccessible to you. =

Cable and even satelite or the preferred satelite broadband hybrid
television systems being discussed will mean you may not be able to =
watch
much TV at all soon as broadcast channels are going to be less important =
and
will eventually disappear. Sitting in front of your TV box and passively
ingesting a channel may not be around in the same way in 5 to 10 years =
time.

Has anyone yet done any lobbying? Or have any other info to add to this?

And if you've used the Sky SMS service it'd be good to get some feedback
from you.

Don't forget you can always ask a mate to come over once a week to help =
you
setup your TV recordings. Do a bit of research on the web beforehand and
you're sorted. Also, if you want to follow an entire series, a series =
link
can be added and you won't need to think about it again.
