Hello Jackie and all, Amazing. Does this sound familiar to you all? Whenever someone not involved with speech output devices comes into contact with one, the overwhelming majority of people are fascinated, for at least 10 minutes, before the interest begins to fade. This has happened to me on numerous occasions, in many different settings. Warning: Soapbox Rant, I got out of bed the wrong side! I strongly believe, an introductory speech welcome would arouse curiosity, and since society is trying to include minorities, I can find no rational argument for manufacturers to deny us speech being enabled at firsts start-up, and every switch on after that, until the user chooses to follow the instructions to disable the speech. Why should they make the effort to place the speech on the device, and then force us to have to struggle with silent menus to initiate speech? It is just aquestion of how the menus are written, as to which will be active at start-up. If that is too complex, and it isn't, then instead, how about a simple slider switch somewhere, controlling speech on/off? Too obvious, I suppose. I thought we had move on from sighted people always knowing what is best for us, and patronisingly refusing to accept that our experiences and suggestions are of merit. The present products are programmed for start-up silence, however, legislation making devices capable of speech, to have to start-up with speech would not make any problems for future products. Rant over, I need a fix of chocolate. Paul Benson. -----Original Message----- From: Jackie Cairns - Email Address: jackie.cairnsplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent On: 01/11/2012 11:30 Sent To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx - Email Address: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: Kindle Keyboard Hi Paul I understand from what I know of Kindle that Amazon aren't responsive to any suggestions on the subject which is a great pity and probably at odds with DDA legislation these days? After verbally welcoming the purchaser to the product, a short message explaining how to disable the voice permanently could be given. Everyone needing speech would be happy, and how could anyone not needing the speech complain about having to make a few keystrokes? Do any pressure groups think this idea is worth pursuing with manufacturers, until the idea becomes accepted as common industry practice? I've just found out that I should be getting a Kindle Keyboard for Christmas, so I too would be grateful for the answer to this one. In case anyone was thinking of replying off-list there may be others in the same boat.
