Hello Andy. I haven't heard the Kindle TTS voice so I can't possibly comment on that. But some TTS devices are good enough to listen to. I use the TTS feature of my Victor Stream DAISY book reader all the time to read text files on the move, or more often laying on my bed :)
But I don't know how you can say everything is costing more and there is less choice. I don't know how old you are and I wouldn't want to come on like my dad and start saying 'in my day' etc. but it's only a generation since computers have found their way into our homes and even less since they have found their way into our pockets.

I don't know how anybody could bear to read a book using the Kindle voice, and the ever so limited TTS accessibility! I'm sure something better can't be too far away, but we are living in times where everything is costing more, and less choice offered, so who knows, and it's always each to their own I guess, but not for me, though I have to admit, it is great that so many titles are available for a quid or so -Andy----- Original Message ----- From: <Clive.Lever@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2012 4:45 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Kindle KeyboardHi Alfred,Yes? And it seems to say everything? In broken up chunks? With that Hello? Is anybody listening? Intonation? The RNIB Talking Books service is great, as is Audible, but there are books out there which would be nice to read that aren't in these formats. A friend kindly let me hear the Kindle Keyboard voice yesterday, and it is much better than I imagined it would be. I don't believe it's necessary to have sighted assistance simply because a device doesn't give you step-by-step audio guidance, though obviously it would be nice if all devices did. To set it up, do the following:Orientate the device so the keyboard is closest to you on the top surfaceand the screen is pointing away from you.Turn the device on by flicking the switch in the bottom right hand corner, the switch is on the bottom end of the device. Note that it will flickbackinto place - it doesn't stay in the on position. Press the home key, this is on the bottom row of the keyboard, second in from the right. You need to do this because the menu we are about to bring up is context sensitive.Next, press the menu key. This is the far right key on the top row of thekeyboard, above the 5-way controller. The 5-way controller looks like a square, and the menu key is a long button. You need to press the down portion of the 5-way controller 5 times to reach settings, which is the penultimate item in the menu. To be on the safeside, you may want to go down more than this and go back up one. Happilythe menu doesn't wrap so you can easily do this. When you're on settings, press the middle portion of the 5-way controllertoselect. There are 3 pages of settings, and the voice guide option is the first option on page 2. Press the page down key once to move to page 2. There are page up and page down keys on each side of the screen in pairs, one above the other. The page up key is significantly shorter. At first they are difficult to distinguish as they are almost flush with the side of the screen. You should now be on the voice guide option. Press the centre of the 5-way controller again. This will turn on voice guide, and you should be good to go. Even if this doesn't work for some reason, the Kindle is fairly basic so you're not going to have broken anything. Jackie, last I checked the iOS app for Kindle wasn't accessible, but things may have moved on. The reason is you have to go into the menu and turn on theguide voice under experimental features. This will enable the menus to beread out. Then everything else becomes accessible to you except theonboardbrowser.
