Hi Ed and John

Thanks very much for all your help and informative instructions. I'll store
your Emails for future reference. It is a pity the iOS app doesn't work.
Having checked in the App Store, the latest release was on 24th October.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

Hi Steve,

Sorry I don't agree. I don't believe it's necessary to have sighted
assistance simply because a device doesn't give you step-by-step audio
guidance, though obviously it would be nice if all devices did.

To set it up, do the following:
Orientate the device so the keyboard is closest to you on the top surface
and the screen is pointing away from you.
Turn the device on by flicking the switch in the bottom right hand corner,
the switch is on the bottom end of the device. Note that it will flick back
into place - it doesn't stay in the on position.
Press the home key, this is on the bottom row of the keyboard, second in
from the right. You need to do this because the menu we are about to bring
up is context sensitive.
Next, press the menu key. This is the far right key on the top row of the
keyboard, above the 5-way controller. The 5-way controller looks like a
square, and the menu key is a long button.
You need to press the down portion of the 5-way controller 5 times to reach
settings, which is the penultimate item in the menu. To be on the safe
side, you may want to go down more than this and go back up one. Happily
the menu doesn't wrap so you can easily do this.
When you're on settings, press the middle portion of the 5-way controller to
select.
There are 3 pages of settings, and the voice guide option is the first
option on page 2.
Press the page down key once to move to page 2. There are page up and page
down keys on each side of the screen in pairs, one above the other. The
page up key is significantly shorter. At first they are difficult to
distinguish as they are almost flush with the side of the screen.
You should now be on the voice guide option. Press the centre of the 5-way
controller again. This will turn on voice guide, and you should be good to
go.

Even if this doesn't work for some reason, the Kindle is fairly basic so
you're not going to have broken anything.

Jackie, last I checked the iOS app for Kindle wasn't accessible, but things
may have moved on.

Ed

Hi Jackie,

Simply put, no. The reason is you have to go into the menu and turn on the
guide voice under experimental features. This will enable the menus to be
read out. Then everything else becomes accessible to you except the onboard
browser.

All the best

Steve

Wondering if some kind soul could tell me if it is possible to initiate
speech on the Kindle Keyboard without sighted assistance out of the box
please?

Apologies if this has been covered before. I am happy for responses off
list to avoid traffic if you prefer.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns
