Hi Tony,

I am not even sure I accept this fully. With Daisy CD players now, you can
speed up the audio considerably, and if you are used to fast speech as I am,
you can read books very quickly, even audio books.

All the best

I think the sad truth is that most people's ear cannot take in information
as fast as it can be taken in by a person who is reading the material from
the printed page. Even I with my limited vision am able to read faster from
the printed page with Low Visual Aids than I can when listening to a book on
tape or on C.D. This means that many books in their entirety would take
several hours or days to read through, whereas they can be read in
considerably less time by a sighted person reading them in what is for them
the way. Hence the books have to be abridged when put out in audio format.

Ah yes Kevin, but those unabridged books go very largely to public
libraries. Of course you can buy them from the sources you mention, but
most people find them prohibitively exspensive.

Most books you will find in Waterstones or whereever are abridged, and, as
I've said before, the CD versions are often more abridged than the cassette
ones! Something to be said for cassettes after all? Well, if MP3 were to
be used more then there would be no need for that.
