You have come up with a number of good options. Right now, I think my best
bet is to install my old 7 gig HD beneath my new 80 gig HD and make the
small drive the slave for the data transfer. I will probably remove the
small HD soon since it has been in use 6 years and is showing signs of
unreliability. I have a few executables to transfer too, the ones
downloaded from the web. Sounds cheap (free is a very good price) and fast.
Some of you asked for more info about my systems. I bought a Compaq
Presario 5030 in 1998 just in time to get WIN98 with it. I later installed
WIN98SE The unit is equipped with a CD drive, ZIP drive, and 3.5" floppy. I
just looked in the MS System Information File for the USB version, but
couldn't find it there. Two USB ports are on the front of the case.
The Dell arrived in March 2004. It came loaded with WINXP Home Edition. I
ordered it with a CD-RW drive and DVD+RW drive. I had it a day and realized
I still needed a 3.5" floppy drive. They are virtually free these days, so
I bought and installed it myself. The DELL unit has 6 USB ports on the back
of the case.
My new unit is many times faster than the old. Bootup time is 10-15 seconds
compared to 2 minutes for the old unit. I'm still on dialup service, but
DSL will soon be available here. I intend to convert when it comes.
The Dell case is large enough to accommodate expansion. I am happy to be
free of the paternal control of the Compaq family of computers and wasn't
even curious about any changes that H-P might make after the merger. My
interests include chess, genealogy, cryptology, writing and photography.
The refurbished Dell Dimension 4600 will serve these interests much better
than anything I have owned in the past.
You have piqued my curiosity about USB connectors and an external drive
case. I'll visit Fry's soon to have a look and ask some questions. I am
also on the verge of finding good uses for a 4-port router while setting up
the old Compaq (with a new HD) for my wife.
Someone asked why my serial cable connection failed to transfer data. I
don't exactly know. I used the transfer wizard in WINXP and made several
trials. The data just doesn't move and I have a couple of friends who had
the same problem. I also tried a custom move repeatedly with similar
results. Go figure. But I have a sneaking suspicion that Compaq just didn't
want to let go of anything inside their box.
