(I might be stating the obvious) There is another, I think more common, method for esd protection on a 3.3v device that is 5v tolerant: That's connect several clamp diodes in series before attaching to the 3.3v rail. You can adjust the qty of these in series so that they do not conduct until 6V (or so). You still get the esd protection plus you're 5v tolerant. Actually, I have. That's one reason why I always question the words "5V tolerant" in any data sheet. I guess(?) they figure the constant clamp current is low enough to not overheat their IC, and therefore they can call it 5V tolerant. Right. Then there are ICs without clamps that have a 5.5V instantaneous absolute maximum rating, and are therefore also "5V tolerant." I guess you can't deny that, even though it's not going to be interpreted that way.
