Can you explain why? When I hear this, it is usually because they have had a
negative experience with a breeder regarding hips.

I don't see the connection with showing. If you suggested that all dogs
which are available for stud service should be ofa'd, I don't think many
would argue this point at all, but the numbers are out there to be read by
all. A requirement is not necessary. I would guess that there is a much
higher percentage of OFA'd stud animals owned by parent club members now
then in the past.
The parent clubs REWARD'S for OFA'd animals are having a positive affect on
the breed. Affects of these awards will be felt after many generations which
will eventually trickle down into the rest of the GSD population. Just think
about it, at any one time there are likely thirty or fourty available Select
males available for breeding. My guess is at best they produce about 2000
puppies annually. That is a verry small percentage of the german shepherds
being registered out there.
