Adobe Reader 5 was the first to begin introducing accessibility features. =

It was greatly improved in versions 6 and 7. I'm not sure if anything was =
=3D
improved in version 8 or not, but I assume there was something.
The reason some PDF files do not read is because they are image-only PDF =
=3D
files. Others do read because they have text behind the image. The image =
=3D
only format is what PDF files were initially intended to be as they were =
=3D
supposed to be a completely portable document (PDF) and would look the =3D
same no matter what computer or printer was used. Adobe has incorporated =
=3D
the text of documents to make it easier for individuals to both create and =
=3D
access PDF files. With later versions of Adobe Reader and screen readers, =
=3D
PDF fiels that have text behind the image are accessible, if they are =3D
tagged correctly, but that's another story. <grin>
If I were you, I would definitely upgrade to the latest version of Adobe =
=3D
Reader and add any updates it says are available. I've not heard of any =
=3D
problems with Adobe Reader from any of my lists. Some of the newer PDF =
=3D
files will need the latest version of the reader to work correctly.

JAWS, however there is Adobe 8.1 (I'm not exactly sure the number, but 8 =

definitely a part of it), which might be worth getting for later versions =

JAWS. The latest version of JAWS I have is 7 so I'm not totally sore =

this, but I figure it couldn't hurt to be as up-to-date as possible.
I've also found with pdf's that some are still unreadable. I don't know =
=3D
why=3D20
this is, though I think it might have something to do with how the file =
=3D
was=3D20
saved. However, most pdf's work fine.
I don't know what your experience with adobe is like, but sometimes a =3D
file=3D20
that has just been downloaded appears as a series of buttons, which =
say=3D20
things like "0" and "jumps to next highlighted section". In such a =3D
case,=3D20
you'll just need to hit b a number of times until you get to "Zoom in" =3D
and=3D20
then hit enter". you might be presented with a dialog box to confirm =3D
your=3D20
request, which just means you'll have to hit enter again. This should =3D
bring=3D20
up the document.

Oh by the way, I'm sorry I forgot this. Most times when you download a =3D
PDF=3D20
for the first time without setting accessibility options it will=3D20
automatically prompt you to do this, through a set of four screens. Just =
=3D
tab=3D20
through all this and you'll see what I mean. If this doesn't happen, =3D
open=3D20
Adobe and look for "accessibility setup assistant" under the help menu.
