Looks like I have adobe download manager, adobe atmosphere for adobe player
and adobe reader as well as adobe active share. Are these separate things I
don't need or want or parts of reader?

Hello Suzanne and Sarah,

Adobe Reader 5 was the first to begin introducing accessibility features. =
It was greatly improved in versions 6 and 7. I'm not sure if anything was =
improved in version 8 or not, but I assume there was something.

The reason some PDF files do not read is because they are image-only PDF =
files. Others do read because they have text behind the image. The image =
only format is what PDF files were initially intended to be as they were =
supposed to be a completely portable document (PDF) and would look the =
same no matter what computer or printer was used. Adobe has incorporated =
the text of documents to make it easier for individuals to both create and =
access PDF files. With later versions of Adobe Reader and screen readers, =
PDF fiels that have text behind the image are accessible, if they are =
tagged correctly, but that's another story. <grin>

If I were you, I would definitely upgrade to the latest version of Adobe =
Reader and add any updates it says are available. I've not heard of any =
problems with Adobe Reader from any of my lists. Some of the newer PDF =
files will need the latest version of the reader to work correctly.

Have fun!

Hi Suzanne,
I think Adobe 7 was the earliest to introduce accessibility options for=20
JAWS, however there is Adobe 8.1 (I'm not exactly sure the number, but 8 =
is=20
definitely a part of it), which might be worth getting for later versions =
of=20
JAWS. The latest version of JAWS I have is 7 so I'm not totally sore on=20
this, but I figure it couldn't hurt to be as up-to-date as possible.
I've also found with pdf's that some are still unreadable. I don't know =
why=20
this is, though I think it might have something to do with how the file =
was=20
saved. However, most pdf's work fine.
I don't know what your experience with adobe is like, but sometimes a =
file=20
that has just been downloaded appears as a series of buttons, which say=20
things like "0" and "jumps to next highlighted section". In such a =
case,=20
you'll just need to hit b a number of times until you get to "Zoom in" =
and=20
then hit enter". you might be presented with a dialog box to confirm =
your=20
request, which just means you'll have to hit enter again. This should =
bring=20
up the document.
I hope this lengthy email makes sense, and good luck.
Oh by the way, I'm sorry I forgot this. Most times when you download a =
PDF=20
for the first time without setting accessibility options it will=20
automatically prompt you to do this, through a set of four screens. Just =
tab=20
through all this and you'll see what I mean. If this doesn't happen, =
open=20
Adobe and look for "accessibility setup assistant" under the help menu.
Again, I hope this helps.
