peter, is this when using auto gain, or manual gain that you have 
experienced this happening?

Hi,

I agree with you that for open-air recordings the noise from the mic
amp probably wouldn't be noticeable, but if you are recording a quiet
guitar or a reader, believe me the hiss will be noticeable when
compared to using a mic preamp.   I only point this out for people
who may want to use it for a range of other purposes, but I do agree
that it does a pretty good job for mic recording too.
