As promised (threatened?), here are the latest results of me downloading a fresh copy of The Magnamund Companion and going over it carefully. This time, I was aided by having *my very own copy*, found in the bargain bin of my Friendly Local Gaming Store. It didn't even have a price on it, so the cashier let me have it for AU$10!! For the record, at today's rates, that's about US$8.60, €6.30, or £5.50. Anyway, enough gloating. On with the list of reasons for Simon to kill me. *APOSTROPHES AND QUOTATION MARKS* 15: 'Shadow Gate' -> ‘Shadow Gate’ 15: Naar's champions -> Naar’s champions 16: warrior's red -> warrior’s red 22: Durenor's greatest -> Durenor’s greatest 23: country's ruler -> country’s ruler 27: city's administration -> city’s administration 34: Vashna's early -> Vashna’s early 37: Vashna's death -> Vashna’s death 42: eagles' crest -> eagles’ crest [or perhaps "eagle crest"?] 43: Master's learning -> Master’s learning 48: Attacker's COMBAT ... Defender's COMBAT -> Attacker’s COMBAT ... Defender’s COMBAT 50: thief's pocket -> thief’s pocket 57: I didn't -> I didn’t 57: one's tunic -> one’s tunic 57: master's door -> master’s door 57: You're a -> You’re a 59: lamb's fur -> lamb’s fur 60: Knight's heralds -> Knight’s heralds 61: didn't notice -> didn’t notice 66: ‘NAME OF REGIMENT -> NAME OF REGIMENT 82: Citadel Miniature’s -> Citadel Miniatures’ 113: Regiment's flag -> regiment’s flag [Note also the R -> r, consistent with the other occurrence on this page.] 122: Barraka's men -> Barraka’s men 123: king's basic -> king’s basic 125: Wolf's coming -> Wolf’s coming 127: Haakon's death -> Haakon’s death 128: Gnaag's sword -> Gnaag’s sword 129: couldn't see ... weren't of -> couldn’t see ... weren’t of 130: horse's head -> horse’s head 132: didn't destroy -> didn’t destroy 135: he's ... He's -> he’s ... He’s [in erratum for Section 79] There are also straight apostrophes used in the Licence, in "Wolf's Bane" and "Mydnight's Hero" and in the general text, but I don't suppose that's really any sort of issue. *FORMATTING AND LAYOUT* It's conceivable that these could be issues with my PDF reader (Okular), but I've checked a number of them in Foxit too... 5: [Is it just my PDF reader, or is the page text shifted way up so as to overlap the "Contents" title?] 10: [That's a peculiarly large gap after "marshalled" at the end of the page; surely "their", from the next page, could fit?] 44: [My PDF reader lists this page as "The Ka i Monastery".] 51: [Another block of text appears shifted up to me, in the Ranger's description.] 52: [My PDF reader lists this page as "...Fryelund a nd Baronial..." in its bookmarks.] 62: [CROWN PRINCE, and all text directly below it, also looks shifted up, overlapping the line above and far from the line below. THE KING is probably also shifted up, but it's hard to tell.] 71: ["= ROGAG (Future tense)" appears to me to be shifted to the left.] 75: [I see a large gap between "10." and "Do you..."] 75: [In the book, the Answers are upside down. Possible to do here?] 80-81: [I see some really strange and glaring artifacts around the edges of the picture, against the black background.] 82: [The second line of the "NB" box is indented in a way that looks peculiar to me; it isn't so in the original text. Also, I think this would look good if bolded like the "Warning" box on p.78.] 110: [All Ruler: and Capital: lines, except Lara's, fail to line up with the other rows. Why is the country data here, anyway? Every word is on page 31, and no other Postscript page has it.] 115: ENGLISH GIAK -> [On the left side, "GIAK" does not line up with its column.] I've also noticed in many places in the book (the original and the PDF), the first paragraph of a section will not have its first line indented, but later paragraphs will. *OUTRIGHT CORRECTIONS* 6: 6700 Agarash the Damned Rises -> 6700 Agarash the Damned rises 7: North Magnamund -> Northern Magnamund 9: Kaltersee -> Kaltesee 10: TADATIZAGAZA -> TADATIZAGA 21: Klanos -> Klarnos 21: Tentarius -> Tentarias 25: Civil War -> Civil war 30: Agarashi descent, that -> Agarashi descent, which [or "descent that"] 42: Kai Grand Master, Sun Eagle -> Kai Grand Master Sun Eagle 46: [Character Profiles is a hyperlink, but Combat Results Table is not.] 54: northern void -> Northern Void 63: Sommerlund's enemies -> Sommerlund’s enemies 66: [Where is the "COLOUR OF UNIFORM" heading?] 75: The monster lives -> The monster lived ["rannad" indicates past tense] 77: at the Kai Monastery. -> at the Kai Monastery? 77: inexperienced modeller but -> inexperienced modeller, but 77: [Style The Materials as a heading, like Instructions on the next page] 77: square) use -> square), use 77: door- and window-frames -> door and window frames 77: [Probably because of the tools used, the "Citadel Miniatures..." paragraph appears as a bullet point, when it should be the asterisked footnote referred to from "...at model shops.*"] 79: scrap of plasticard fill -> scrap of plasticard, fill 79: 8) The Base. -> 8) The base. [None of the other numbered points' headings are title-cased. Incidentally, this is the same heading as step 1...] 79: stone flooring: first -> stone flooring, first 79: Next dry-brush -> Next, dry-brush 79: craft so the -> craft, so the 79: the model opposite -> the model overleaf 83: Fig. 2. -> [The 2 appears to be bolded unnecessarily.] 83: This basic bull -> This basic hull 83: Their bulls are -> Their hulls are 83: drybrushed -> dry-brushed [As everywhere else.] 86: The Story So Far -> THE STORY SO FAR [As the original, and matching "THE GAME RULES".] 86: Guild call -> Guild calls 87: Bottle of wine -> Bottle of Wine 91 (s.33): [Mark up Net as a spell name.] 92 (s.38): [Mark up Counterspell as a spell name.] 92 (s.43): [Mark up Invisible Shield as a spell name.] 92 (s.44): [Mark up Vigour as a spell name.] 93 (s.45): [Mark up Levitation as a spell name.] 93 (s.46): [Mark up Mend as a spell name.] 93 (s.47): [Mark up Levitation as a spell name.] 93 (s.48): [Mark up Mind Charm as a spell name.] 93 (s.49): [Mark up Lightning Hand as a spell name.] 93 (s.53): [Mark up Mend as a spell name.] 93 (s.55): [Mark up Sense Evil as a spell name.] 94 (s.58): [Mark up Counterspell as a spell name.] 94 (s.59): [Mark up Net as a spell name.] 94 (s.62): [Mark up Lightning Hand as a spell name.] 95 (s.64): [Mark up Vigour as a spell name.] 95 (s.71): [Mark up Mind Charm as a spell name.] 96 (s.76): [Mark up Mind Charm and Sense Evil as spell names.] 96 (s.78): [Mark up Levitation as a spell name.] 97: HERB-WARDERN -> HERB-WARDEN 97: [The "Female Fighter" is called the Adventuress in the rules.] 107: them-selves -> themselves 107: Vaderian -> Vaderish [Maybe?] 107: refuge against his recensionist followers -> refuge for his recensionist followers [Or "his recensionist enemies"? It doesn't make much sense to take refuge from one's followers...] 109: VADUZHAN -> THE KINGDOM OF VADUZHAN [As p. 24] 111: Slovian Mercenaries -> Slovian mercenaries 113: use then to -> use them to 113: —means -> means [twice] 113: over-whelming -> overwhelming *WORD USAGE* 20: comprised ... of mercenaries -> composed ... of mercenaries 63: Comprised of -> Composed of [or "Comprising"] And while we're on the subject of "comprised", the TSSF of the Grand Master books speaks of "factions which comprised this huge army", which is the non-standard usage of "comprise" -- like "is comprised of", but in the active rather than passive voice. Same goes for 14tcok, section 235. And do we care that JD consistently uses "decimate" in its common, but formally incorrect, sense of "near-total destruction", rather than "destruction of a sizeable fraction (originally 1/10th)"? *MISCELLANEOUS QUERIES* 13: [I'm not sure what "The Kotains" are -- the coast? the mountains? -- but could it be a typo for "The Koltains", to match the "Koltainian Ocean"?] 24: city of Sejanoz -> [In the absence of the map from 27v, I've searched the text of that book instead, including the map *description*, and I have to ask: What city?] 82: [Style question: in the possessive form of a vessel's name, should the 's be italicised along with the rest of the name? Both ways look awkward to me!] 103: [As for p.13.] 108: [Okay, I know it says Rezovia lost "western territories" to Lunarlia, but the Mens river -- supposedly the foundation of the kingdom -- is the border between Lunarlia and Ilion, nowhere near modern Rezovia. Their capital is by the mouth of the Ioma; perhaps that's the river that's meant? Maybe?] 112: [What, no Postscript for the Hammerlands?] 115: [I take it this "semi-regular feature" never went beyond D?] *GIAK LANGUAGE* I cracked a joke about checking the Giak text last time I pored over TMC. Well, this time I did it. In addition to any outright corrections above, I did find some points for consideration On page 66: * It says on p.114 that -im is a Drakkarim suffix, whereas Giaks use -a, but this isn't borne out in the regiment names here (nor in several lexicon entries like "nozodim"). * Kaggazheg (kaggaz-sheg) is singular; should it be Kaggazhegim (or better, Kaggazhega)? * Ditto for Moggador, which also technically means "hammer" and not "hammerer". * Lajakaan seems to use an otherwise unlisted word for "heart" (kaan? haan?) * Ogshashez really means "to cut [with] a knife" -- but maybe it's an idiom? * Nanenrakim seems to use an otherwise unlisted word for "life" (na? nan?) On pages 74-75: * The Giak letter 'e' looks very different each time it's written. For instance, in the second Giak inscription, compare first line, sixth character, to second line, second character. * It's worth noting that "ta" seems to be an interrogative particle, not listed anywhere I can see. Since Giak is stated to have a question mark (possibly read as "ta"?), perhaps we should end the Giak translations of the questions with a question mark? * Azagada is either a typo or some conjugation of azgad, "to burn". (I do find it quite amusing that phrase 2, "Zee kor hezaa kuz hoki narg", could equally mean "The view FROM the slave huts is nice"...!) And lastly, page 115: * "Dulag" means arrow... so "the" Zejar-dulaga is actually a plural? But does anybody actually care about the vagaries of Giak usage? (...besides Desert Lynx/Dusty Shelf?) I haven't actually pored over the rest of the text, being the Newsletter inclusions... yeah, I think I'm done for this round. -- Tim Pederick
