Hi guys

I scanned Pic 1 from 01hh three different ways:

* colour @ 300dpi
* black and white @ 300dpi
* greyscale @ 300dpi with +10 contrast and -10 brightness (the original greyscale scan was far too light)

I can't e-mail the results because they're too huge. I put the archive here: <http://www.projectaon.org/staff/simon/01hh_Pic1_Test.rar>

No other work has been done to them. What do you think? Which is best? What processes need to be applied? Could a macro be written to do this? Should the frames be straightened (I am in favour of this, but others might not be)?

Many, many questions. >_<

On a separate topic, I'm doing some maintenance on my staff area. I've remove the EE and SS picture archives; can I remove the LW_Maps.rar file, which contains the replacement scans for maps for Books 1-8? Or are they still yet to be incorporated into the source XML data/folders/whatever?

When I scan from yellowed pages I tend to do the scan in full colour, then use image manipulation software to remove the colouring (I think this gives more flexibility and better overall results). With PSP an image optimise, followed by greyscale, completed by a couple of contrast enhancement cycles usually does the trick.

I'm not entirely sure what the best scan settings would be when
scanning from a printed book. The more resolution the better (within
some limits). I've been using B&W mode on the illustrations from Brian
Williams. That might not be best when dealing with a yellowed/greyed
book page. I believe in this case that the threshold setting in B&W
mode would be crucial in getting a good scan.

Perhaps an experiment is in order. Try scanning one illustration with
two different settings and send them to me to see which is most
workable. Depending on how smart the scanner or software is, you may
want to fiddle with the B&W threshold setting.

* 300dpi, B&W
* 300dpi, grayscale

A lossless image format such as Windows BMP would be best, but please
send them in a ZIP file or similar. :)
