Bummer on the dialup only choice - I don't know if I could get used to it again - I am very spoiled with my cable. My friend- just up the street a little way, is on dialup. she is JUST beyond the cable lines and where DSL is available. She put her TV on a satelite, and is debating about putting her computer on the satelite. When we moved here a little over 10 years ago, is when the cable was brought out this far. It stopped at the end of our street. They've taken it further since, but not around the corner where she lives. My cable company will re-claim their modem if/when I stop using their service. It is the same charge per month no matter what you have. Actually - I'm not sure you have the option to NOT use theirs - I'm guessing you probably do, but why would you if there is no reduction in rate? It's interesting to hear what different companies offer ! My cable company is not a big conglomerate - I live in a fairly rural area - On the 'outskirts' of where I live, the conglomerates start - they probably charge for everything - and an arm and a leg to boot!! It was cheaper when I changed from dial up to cable, to go with the cable than what I was paying for a 2nd phone line and a regular dial up connection. Now - with cable, what I do get, is a better rate on digital cable since I have both my computer and my tv's on cable - it's only $5.00 extra/month to go digital. So I get a ton more stations and a much clearer picture. At that time, I didn't have an option for a DSL line - Cris ----- Original Message ----- From: TechRose@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 9:42 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: How do I use start up kit high speed I have not seen the cable company LOAN a modem...but I have seen them RENT them..for like $10 a month. I cancelled renting mine when it went to $10 a month to rent it..bought one for $40 on sale... then they raised the cable rate $10 and upgraded the service to 1.5 and if you are new..they gave you a modem with not rental fee for a year... Somewhere in this deal...I did not come out on top! lol! I already had my nic cards.... Enjoy! If you cancel the service, they take back the modem, but not the ethernet card. In contrast, DSL companies give you the ethernet card and the modem. They GIVE it to you... its yours, so if you cancel the DSL service, you keep the modem. Of course, different cable companies and DSL companies will operate differently. But, for the most part, I've always seen cable companies LOAN while DSL companies GIVE. > In your case, you said they came out and gave you another ethernet card. I would assume that either A) there was no ethernet card in the computer (maybe its a new computer?), or B) they just pu a new one in just to make sure they have a working card. Either way, if they give it, then great. Installing new drivers might just be because they're upgrading the drivers, or just installing driver from scratch. Also no big deal. Heck, if they come to you and do, the better for you. Me personally, I hate companies coming out and touching my computer. Time Warner/Earthlink, for example, my company, will come out and insist I need the Earthlink software to get a connection. Obviously, they're morons, cause the software is NOT needed, and you get the connection without it. And, the software could cause other problems. So, I say, let ME do it. Problem with that... you call with a complaint, and these NOT-TOO-SAAVY techs like to say, "yeah, its not working cause you don't have the softwar > e in." Yea, right. Don't come to me when you're looking for a tech job in my company!!! > > ---Troth To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
