yes - you're right - they are loaning me the modem - giving the eithernet card.
I bought a new computer and they wanted almost 100 bucks to add the eithernet
card - so I said no, since I could get it for free - this was almost 3 years
ago...I still have my original modem. they claim it's the best one they've ever
used, but use various ones. this one is a Nortel - networks 100.
speaking of earthlink!! a friend has it and has problems with a lot of double
mail coming in - any thoughts on that? I think she probably has their software
!!!

From what I've seen (at least in my area) is that the cable companies will give
you the ethernet card (since they're so cheap anyway) but the modem is a loaner
or rental (in my case a loaner). If you cancel the service, they take back the
modem, but not the ethernet card. In contrast, DSL companies give you the
ethernet card and the modem. They GIVE it to you... its yours, so if you cancel
the DSL service, you keep the modem. Of course, different cable companies and
DSL companies will operate differently. But, for the most part, I've always
seen cable companies LOAN while DSL companies GIVE.
In your case, you said they came out and gave you another ethernet card. I
would assume that either A) there was no ethernet card in the computer (maybe
its a new computer?), or B) they just pu a new one in just to make sure they
have a working card. Either way, if they give it, then great. Installing new
drivers might just be because they're upgrading the drivers, or just installing
driver from scratch. Also no big deal. Heck, if they come to you and do, the
better for you. Me personally, I hate companies coming out and touching my
computer. Time Warner/Earthlink, for example, my company, will come out and
insist I need the Earthlink software to get a connection. Obviously, they're
morons, cause the software is NOT needed, and you get the connection without
it. And, the software could cause other problems. So, I say, let ME do it.
Problem with that... you call with a complaint, and these NOT-TOO-SAAVY techs
like to say, "yeah, its not working cause you don't have the softwar
e in." Yea, right. Don't come to me when you're looking for a tech job in my
company!!!

my cable company provides the eithernet card and the modem 'for free'. And
when I changed computer's, they came out and put a new eithernet card in - and
set it up again as part of the service. I needed new drivers installed I think

Once you have your cable line set up to give you a broadband connection
(which the ISP/cable company does) all you need to do is connect the cable line
to the modem and the modem to the computer. So, theoretically, all you need to
do is move the modem to the new location and it should work. I've heard of some
companies requiring specific modems, but not sure how true that is.
