[mso] Re: How can I get Excel 2007 to close when I close the last open workbook

Are we talking about the same thing ...

By closing a workbook, I'm referring to using Ctrl-F4 or ticking the black X 
or selecting File / Close.  (As distinct from Alt-F4 or ticking the red X or 
selecting File / Exit.)

If we are talking about the same thing, I've just tried it again in Excel 
2003 and it certainly does leave Excel open on my computer - with a grey 
screen - after the last Ctrl-F4 or File Close.  And I can't find an option 
to change this action.

So does Word 2003.

There is a difference between the Alt-F4 action for Word 2003 and Excel 
2003.  In Word, it closes the current document, and DOES close Word if 
that's the last document.  In Excel, it closes all workbooks and Excel.

This is entirely subjective, of course.  To me, the use of Ctrl-F4 to close 
out workbooks is an indication to Excel that I DO want Excel to stay up.  If 
I had wanted it to close, I would have used Alt-F4.
