Thanks, Dave, for your response. But the leaving of Excel open after the last workbook close did not happen to me in 2003: Excel itself was also closed; that's why it has become frustrating in 2007. I don't understand why Excel (i.e. Microsoft) should make the (to me, arrogant) assumption that you still want to use the application even when you have closed down the last instance. If I close all open workbooks in 2003, it leaves Excel open with a grey screen. You need to Alt-F4 or X Excel to close it down completely.
