I found the Chester UK collet chuck very good. It's available in MT2 or
MT3: you do need drawbar to make sure it stays in. Additionally, it
doesn't take up as much room as the Vertex. On the downside, frequent
changing of collets is a pain.
However, for small mills, I still just use the Jacobs chuck. To make sure
it doesn't leave the arbor, I drilled and tapped a 4BA hole through the
centre of the chuck, and a 6Ba tapped hiole in the arborl. This allows the
chuck to be jacked off the arbor if necessary, but a 6BA screw just holds
it together very succesfully. I did have to drill and tap the MT end of
the arbor to take a drawbar, but that's not too difficult.
Did the same with teh Jacobs chuck on the lathe tailstock.

Happy New Year all.
