A good cleaning with brake cleaner with  perchlorethane or trichloethane  in
it will remove all traces of oil  so the epoxy will stick.  Here in the
States, the material of choice  for this would be "J.B. Weld®" and it may be
available in Old Blighty as  well.

Hi, I can confirm that J.B. Weld is available in the UK. I purchased some  
only a few weeks ago locally, to do exactly the same job with a 2nd user pillar 
 
drill I purchased that looked as though the moths had been at the table. It  
worked a treat. and as you said sticks like **** to a blanket.
