Hello, Sarah. This is just a quick note to let you know how glad we are that you've signed up for this list. Welcome!!! Feel free to ask any questions you feel led to ask, and also feel free to add any of us to Skype if you use that. We're a very diverse and gregarious bunch, so you'll definitely get your questions answered in short order on this list. Again, a big welcome to you!

Hi sarah, There are many store technicians who know next to nothing about VoiceOver, so you may have to shop around a bit to find a store with the expertise of technicians. Having said that, I think you are using the right approach, and not just giving up on learning or "test driving" a Mac, which your stores will do. There are some very excellent power users on this list who will be more than happy to help you with whatever problems you may encounter. I cannot speak for myself, because like so many others, I have many things to learn about VoiceOver, but I use the Mac for just about everything I do in every-day business and pleasure. The only thing I use Windows for any more is to play audio files from the System Access Mobile Network; otherwise the Mac has more than met my needs. I hope that, as your Mac experience grows, you will find a great deal of enjoyment, as have manhy of us on this list. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage, Alaska.

Hi there. Thanks for the welcome!
Ok, here goes the intro.
My name is Sara and I live somewhere in Canada. I am 27 years old and I like to consider myself a computer geek but then I meet people who know a lot more than I do so I realize that I don't know that much. I joined this mailing list because I wanted to learn about macs. I saw a mac at the university bookstore and thought it was cool. It even gave me speech when I pressed command f5 which was the only command anything I knew. lol It talked, but nobody at the store knew how to use the screen-reader so I got frustrated and decided it didn't really work...but then I found this list and www.icanworkthisthing.com and realized that I had been pressing just about every key to get it to read except! the V O keys. lol My email address has "649" in it because when I found this list, I felt like I had won the lottery lol. I am going to a different store where I hope the sales people will be more knowledgeable. I am going to look at macs and try some more stuff now that I know some commands. I'll report tomorrow on how it goes. I think I'd better braille out some basic commands to try or I'll end up forgetting them all lol.
You people rock, thanks for being so patient with me, a total newbie.
Sara
