Doug Herr answered Elliot, by saying:

A circular polarizer should be used with any camera that has a beam-splitter
between the light source and the meter cell. Every Leica SLR from the SL to
the R9 qualifies because the semi-silvered mirror acts as a beam splitter.

To which Art Tafil added:

Great answer. I was going to send that out.

Anyone who also uses other brands of cameras such as Pentax LX, Nikon F3 series and ALL Nikon AF bodies et al.

OK guys... I agree. HOWEVER, I used an old style, linear polarizing filter on my R5 & R6 with no apparent ill effects, for years. (I know, the metering is supposed to be 'off' with a liner polarizer, but I could find no problem with the exposures!)

When I finally indulged in a circular polarizer for my R8, I discovered that the amount of darkening of the sky, along with all the other effects one uses a polarizer for were noticeably lessened. So much so, that I'm tempted to go back to the old, cheaper and seemingly better linear model.

What gives here?

Thanks, for your thoughts. This one's got me confused!

David.
