Yes it could easily backfire and get you black listed!

We get hundreds of spams a day, that use forged "from address's" to non
existant user at our domain, bouncing them 'back' to the the forged from
address achieves the spammers aim, and makes us appear to be the spammer.

Rule 1. never bounce back (return user not known)

Rule 2. don't reply unless you get repeat emails from the same source that
has an unsubscribe option and even then only if you consider on balance that
there is a realistic possibility that you may really be unsubscribed.
I will do this to postings from companies that seem to be real and often
even give me their phone number, I would never bother with a Viagra type
selling site.
