Mr. Tanner,

Please do not presume to know what Levelstar or any company's policies are or are not regarding what they charge and why, as you cannot know this without being directly involved. The reason I will not allow this discussion to continue on this list has absolutely nothing to do with any of the reasons you assume, but rather simply stems from the fact that I do not wish to add to the traffic of this list by encouraging quibling over dings that are an individual's private decision. If you are resistant to the price, you simply do not have to upgrade. It's that simple. As I said before, it is your perfect right to post alternative products for adding additional storage to the list. I also have no problem with someone asking about the whys and wherefores of the price if it is done in a civil manner. However, it is each and every person's individual choice as to what they feel is the best value. I will not tolerate arguing over it though, as it is not appropriate here.

To answer the question of what the cost covers, as I understand it, it covers the cost of the new drive, and the USB enclosure as well as the labor involved in changing out the hard drives in the unit, and installing the old drive in the USB enclosure. If there is more to it, I'm sure another member of the LevelStar staff will enlighten us. Again, whether it is worth it or not is a decision each of you will have to make.

Jenny

Of course you are being told not to discuss this topic on the
mailinglist because people from the companies involved are on the
list and they do not want to know that there may be resistance to
the price they want to charge. So, if you are not allowed to
discuss the topic of price they can and will charge whatever they
want to charge, and insist that nobody said that they had a
problem
with the price. I don't know many companies that want end user
input as to what they should charge for their products. This
seems
to be particularly true of companies who produce assistive
technology who believe that because it isn't off-the-shelf
technology that they should be able to charge whatever they want.

Well, they can charge whatever they wish, but the consumer has
the
right to decide not to buy their product too.

I do have one further question on this topic. When my unit was
purchased
July 3, 2007,I was informed that I had the equivalent of a
software/hardware
maintenance agreement for one year as I am sure everyone was
informed the
same. If that is so, why is any price being charged for this
upgrade if in
fact we are under a software/hardware maintenance agreement and
our
year has
not expired?

I'd like to know why the price is quite so much and as a
consumer
of the
product, I feel I have a right to ask. This is not about me or
anyone else
not having the money. I have 250 dollars I'd be glad to hand to
Levelstar
right now if they could kindly tell me, what is it about ten gb
of space
or the process of installation that makes it necessary to charge
the said
price. Many blindness related companies no matter the good work
they have
done have been harshly criticized in the past for the horrid up
charging
of their blind consumers. I'd hate to see a company with such a
wonderful
product begin to fall in to that category. We're told not to
discuss such
topics on the list but to me the topic relates because we the
consumer
using the product need to know exactly what we will get when we
send our
product in for this upgrade should we choose that to be the best
choice
for us.

I'm still mulling this over. $250.00 is a bit pricy for 10gb of

additional
storage.
