You are ignoring my (or the original poster's) argument that this
feature is a hidden feature to begin with. Therefor the addition of the
button would not be "for no real gain". It would provide the very real
gain that it becomes obvious how to minimize windows without consulting
any guide.

Double clicking the title is a common function, you just don't know what
will happen, or will expect something different when coming from another
platform.
Since you cannot really know what will happen when you click one of
those buttons for the first time, the learn effect is exactly the same;
I agree that double clicking the header is more obscure, but not badly
so. Besides, with workspaces you're not really dependent of that
feature, anyway.

You may think that this benefit is minimal and does not outweight the
disadvantage of adding more visual noise, but please allow others to
disagree.

Sure, I always allow others to disagree -- doesn't mean they're right
though (to be fair, it also doesn't mean I'm right, I'm just stating my
opinion, anyway) ;-)

Then we are on the same line. I just wanted to make the point that adding a minimize button would have valid reasons. I am not completely convinced it is necessary myself, but the pros and cons should be fairly discussed.

We both agree that the missing minimizing animation is the biggest problem.

However, I am not convinced that most users would readily accept that they should have no expectations about what happens for the title bar double-click. On the other hand, the fact that many systems, I think even OS X, allow to configure this, shows that maximization is not truely the most likely expectation.

It remains that minimization is a hidden feature. I am not completely convinced by your arguments that it is unimportant enough to leave it at that. I would love to hear more oppinions on this.
