Yes, I agree. Thank you for mentioning this.

Be had it right, IMO. Their implementation works, visually, given 
classic menu item sets and does cope decently with the occasional odd 
combo.

In Haiku the menus now look inconsistent within the same menu bar if 
there's a combo in one menu but not in the rest. Do we really want 
this?

Do we even need the combos at all? (most of the time)
We could just as well use two menu items instead:

Open...            Alt-O
Open Recent       >

Combining them looses clarity and gains very little, IMO.
