Keep in mind that some of the strange behvior for a mouse can happen when
the proc goes to 100%. So although it could be a hardware issue, it could
also be that the proc isn't keeping up with demand.

As for the AV, check the way it's set. If it's set to scan on receipt, I've
seen it give quirky results. It might be better to have it scan on access
or just let it get handled at the server and the file level to prevent
issues like that. Be sure to exclude the OST and PST's.

You might have him also check for any add-ins that were added as a result of
any third party apps. That can also have an impact.

Good luck Vicki,

Al

Outlook stops responding totally if he leaves it alone
the operating system is WinXP and it's Outlook 2002
He does have Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition
He is not in the office but I will have him try a different mouse to make
sure that is not the issue - thanks for the reminder to check the most
simple things - sometimes I make it more difficult than it really is

What happens if he leaves the frozen outlook alone? Does it ever come back?

Any anti-virus? Have you checked drivers? A bouncing mouse sounds more
like a driver/hardware issue than an Outlook issue.

What's the OS and Outlook version?

He is sometimes using a wireless network when this happens so it makes sense
that it will be somewhat slower
and I have informed him of that - he understands that part of it -
- but the issues he reports - are not just slowness - the cursor seems to be
jumping around to odd locations periodically and Outlook freezes up on him
frequently - to the degree he has to shut it down completely and sometimes
loses the emails he is working on.

Following on with MF's suggestions, it is likely a slow network link. Have
you included your Exchange IP address in your DNS lookup? Fixed your NIC
speed (probably 100Mbps, Full Duplex - on all machines).

What is your CPU monitor telling you when you get the problem? If at 100%,
what is using the resources. What is your networking performance monitor
telling you? (Both available in Task Manager in XP)

Would any instant messaging piece (like MSN or AOL instant messenger) blow
up how Outlook works? He probably has AOL instant messenger on most of the
time.

The users profile on the laptop.

Was the IM checkbox checked?, did clearing it help the issue?
