Hi.
Using the free version requires that you manually install it and manually go through a set up process which is technically troublesome unless you know your stuff.
The paid version from CakeWalk installs in 2 seconds and requires no configuration. 

Seriously, if you have the $20, save yourself the headache.

Hey Gordon. According to the Lame web-site, it looks like it's free. I didn't run across any mention of cost. Is there more than one version? I've also heard that the Fraunhofer encoder is supposed to sound considerably better than the Lame. Do you know anything about that. Also when I down-load one of these things, where do I put it to be able to use it with Sonar? Right now I'm still using 7 producer. It is the lame encoder which is one of the best, and worth $20.

You can actually configure any mp3 encoder, but there's a certain degree of tech ability needed to manually enter the settings.
Personally, I'd pay for the unlock code from Cakewalk if you have the spare cash. 

I paid for my version and it was set up in 2 seconds.
