Wow, that is pretty awesome about Birklee... I was thinking about applying
there next year and now I think I might...
But it is actually my CC that is giving me problems. They are going to
insist I learn Pro Tools to get my Music Business major... So I'll be
learning Pro Tools :P...
I'm not sure, but I know most of my friends have 1 Mac that they plug their
studio into where they record professionally with Pro Tools... I really
think it is a matter of where you live if it is worth it. I live like right
next to Apple head quarters so just about everything here is Pro Tools and
apple... Actually I haven't met very many people who have even herd of Sonar
(and if they have they have never used it)...
Where as in other places I'm sure Sonar is used more...
But thanks for the specs! :P

Yes, the problem is macs have a set hardware, which is very tightly
monitored and tested. With pc's, every manufacturer does what they want,
you've got various chipsets (which as a daw builder, i can tell you chipsets
have more to do with if your system will work or not, crackle or pop, more
than other parts like the interface or software do). And many times you get
people who buy a "top of the line" system from a mainstream manufacturer
such as dell or hp or gateway, and the system obviously doesn't perform as
well because it wasn't built as a daw, not that macs are, but because of the
tight grip on the hardware used apple can ensure that the components all
work together and work good. PC manufacturers are usually trying to get the
parts that are cheapest for them to get so that they can keep the price low
and sell you the system. That's why most good daws are about a gran or
higher, because you can't cut corners when it comes to good performance.
Given the right hardware and the right configuration, i think a pc can
perform just as well as the a mac could. Of course there are always factors
like software and drivers, but again, getting the right combination will
yield excellent results!

I think that today, pro tools and mac are over-rated. PCs have great
hardware and equivalent processors to mac. I use an RME Audio Interface, and
my friend uses pro tools digidesign. he loves the sound produced from the
RME way more than his digidesign and wishes he could use it with his pro
tools. I think that pcs and macs are comporable today.

But you do have the exhalent warranty on Apple computers (you can just bring
them to the store), the actual hardware is way better than most PCs and
around where I live, if you don't have a Mac with Pro Tools you probably
can't get any kind of credits for recording in college.
Annabelle can you elaborate on how it didn't work? Was the processor slow,
was it hard to get around or what made it not optimal for your use? And did
you have both Mac and Windows on the same computer?

Agreed, Phil. Also, don't forget the headache involved of learning all new
recording software, and the potential money you'd have to spend on possibly
getting some training for it; not to mention the probability that companies
like Freedom Scientific are far better apt to suit the needs of blind
clients than Apple or Microsoft.

Hi all. I know that some of you were commenting that if you purchase a MAC
then, you won't need to spend $1000 on a screen reader like Jaws. However,
keep in mind that when you do purchase that hi end mac that will be required
to run Pro Tools over a PC then, it's probably going to cost you
significanly more than $1000 that you would have paid out for your Windows
screen reader. Just a thought.
Also, looked at voiceover recently and although the speech sounds good, it
was half announcing words when reading E-mail. Annoying to say the least.
